Index Funds

Investing in a group of stocks and not an individual company.
Dow Jones (30 Large Companies)
S&P 500 ( 500 Large Companies)
NASDAQ (more than 3,300 companies, mostly technology and internet)
Russell 3000 (3,000 smaller companies)
*some companies may be in more than one index*

There are risks associated with buying and Index Fund because it is still made up of stocks, however, an Index fund over time has performed better than most Mutual Funds and has less risks than buying individual stocks.
These funds do have fees, and don't have a high rate of return.  They are purchased through a brokerage firm.
